BIAS: INTERROGATING AI THROUGH MUSIC
Abstract
This program combines a lecture and concert showcasing Artemi-Maria Gioti’s recent compositional work, with a focus on her Bias cycle—compositions that merge acoustic instruments, voice, and AI-based interactive music systems to critically interrogate algorithmic and data bias. In her lecture, Gioti will delve into critical themes on AI explored in these works: concretely, how these works challenge the concept of generalizability—the presumed capacity of machine learning algorithms to apply insights from training data to novel contexts—and deconstruct data, by challenging their neutrality and highlighting their material and processual dimensions. More broadly, the lecture will explore the intersection between artistic practice and critical discourse on AI, by addressing the questions: What can artistic research reveal about the mechanisms and assumptions underlying AI? And how can such critique shape broader conversations on technology?
Bio
Artemi-Maria Gioti is a composer and artistic researcher working in the field of Music and Artificial Intelligence (AI). She is currently a Lecturer in New Media and Digital Technologies for Music at the University of Music “Carl Maria von Weber” Dresden and a Research Fellow in Music and AI at University College London (UCL), working on the ERC project MusAI.
Her compositional work centers on the concept of interactive compositions: musical works that involve real-time interaction between human musicians and interactive music systems incorporating Machine Learning (ML). Her artistic research explores how the use of Machine Learning in these works impacts the ontological entities of “author”, “composition”, “performance” and “musical work”, and aims to produce critical insights into ML and AI gained through (auto)ethnographies of the creative process.
She studied Composition, Electroacoustic Composition and Computer Music at the University of Macedonia (Greece), the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (Austria). She holds a doctoral degree in Music Composition from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
Her music has been performed by ensembles such as Klangforum, DissonArt, Schallfeld, AuditivVokal, Insomnio, Sond’Arte, and soloists such as Xenia Pestova-Bennett, Magda Mayas, Jana Luksts, Evan Runyon, Johan Soderlund, Jelte van Andel, Joel Diegert, Bernhard Fograscher and others.
Her artistic and scholarly work has been distinguished with an Honorary mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2023, the 2019 Giga-Hertz Production Award for Electronic Music (ZKM, Karlsruhe), the Austrian State Scholarship for Composition and the Best Practice Award of the Artistic-Scholarly Doctoral School of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
